Steve Read

We are sorry to inform you all of the sad news that Steve Read  has died in Zanzibar on the 15th July 1952.

Life rarely brings us someone as unique as our past Chairman, Steve Read, and we feel fortunate to have known him. He served as a volunteer, trustee and Chairman at Books Abroad. He introduced our present chairman, Vinay Ruparella, to Books Abroad.

Steve decided to emigrate to Zanzibar and settle there after many years in Scotland. In the last two years, he succumbed twice to Covid; after the second time, he did not recover due to other health problems.

Jamie Love, his friend and our past volunteer and trustee, left on Saturday to help with the funeral arrangements.

There are no words to express our sorrow, but we wish for a moment of appreciation for a joyful life taken too soon.

Jolyon Robinson

Jolyon Robinson, who died recently, was the first Chairman of Books Abroad SCIO, in those early years from 1982, when the charity was known as LINK.

His involvement contributed to its firm foundation so that it continues to thrive and now claims to have saved, over the years, some 4 million books from going into landfill. Instead, these books have taken on another life as an invaluable educational resource helping schools and other institutions overseas.

Jolyon’s contribution is respectfully remembered and we send our condolences to his wife and family.
